HANOI AND THE RED RIVER DELTA

The cradle of the Dai Viet civilization, the Red River Delta is mainly formed by the function of the Red River and the Thai Binh River.

Every year, this moderately sized delta (15,000km2) is reinforced by a gigantic quality of rainfall (100 million m3). Besides the two main rivers, a dense network of canals and ditches serves for irrigation and water drainage.

Thousands of kilometres of dikes meander around the delta and the midlands. Villages surrounded by green bamboo belts spread out into the immense rice fields. And, of course, the delta is also site of the irresistibly enchanting capital of Ha Noi.

The Red River Delta possesses rich cultural traditions. Many eminent personalities, such as Nguyen Trai, Le Qui Don, and Nguyen Binh Khiem, were bom in this region.

Besides, several typical art forms are also deeply rooted in the deltas' history. The melodies of popular songs such as quan ho, hat xam, hat a dao and the theatrical arts of cheo and tuong have been closely tied to the lifestyle of the North Vietnamese people.

Musical instruments such as the monochord harp, two-chord fiddle, bamboo flute, trumpet and drum, spread enthusiasm throughout the villages during festivals, a precious cultural heritage that this region has carefully maintained.
